Chicago - A security guard and two men helping him detain an armed man who was inside an apartment building were all shot by an accomplice of the man they were holding early Wednesday in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side.
The shooting happened at 12:05 a.m. in the first floor hallway of an apartment building at 6916 S. Oglesby Ave. and left the three men who are all residents of the building hospitalized, according to police.
Two men, 35 and 56, were assisting a 40-year-old security guard detain a man who was armed, according to a Grand Crossing District police captain.
They recovered the gun but “all of a sudden’’ an accomplice of the man detained came into the building and opened fire, striking the three.
The man holding the gun they took from the detained man dropped it and the suspect and his accomplice took it and fled the building on foot in an unidentified direction, according to the captain.
The 35-year-old man who lives on the first floor was shot in the back, the face and the left shoulder; the security guard was shot in the abdomen and the 56-year-old man who lives on the second floor suffered a gunshot to the left hip, according to the captain.
The victims -- who are not related to each other -- were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, in serious but “stable” condition, the captain said.
The suspects were not in custody early Wednesday, according to the captain who did not know a motive immediately and said there have been no recent similar problems in the apartment building, which is usually "pretty quiet.''
