Slain Austin Man Identified

Chicago - A man who was fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood Wednesday night has been identified.

Early Thursday, officers were on the scene collecting shell casings on the 5400 block of West West End Avenue after a 24-year-old man was fatally shot at 11:34 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

Dewan Smith, 24, of 4857 W. Washington Blvd., was dead on the scene, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Thursday.

The motive has not been established as of 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and no suspects were in custody, police said.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
