Chicago - Police in south suburban Riverdale fatally shot a Chicago man Monday afternoon who allegedly refused to drop a weapon, police said.
Randy Collins, 33, of 11154 S. Vernon Ave., was shot by police at 14116 School St. in Riverdale and was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Police responded about 1:30 p.m. to a call of three males with an assault weapon near 141st and School streets. Officers found the suspects at 14123 School St. and chased them to the rear of that address, where they found a man -- later identified as Collins -- with a gun in his possession, police said.
An officer told Collins to drop his weapon. When he allegedly failed to comply, the officer shot him, police said. Collins was struck and fell to the ground, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office said.
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is investigating.
