Man Charged in Murder of 17-Year-Old CPS Student

Chicago - An 18-year-old convicted felon has been arrested in downstate Illinois and charged with the shooting death of a 17-year-old high school student that happened on an Englewood street last month.

Martel Barrett, 17, was shot on the 6700 block of South Damen Avenue about 9:20 a.m. on October 26. Barrett, a student at Dyett High School, 55 E. 51st St., had been shot multiple times. Barrett, of 2007 W. 68th Pl., died later that day at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Timothy Lightfoot, of the 7200 block of South Marshfield Avenue, was apprehended Tuesday in Urbana, Ill., by the Great Lakes Fugitive Apprehension Unit, which is comprised of the Chicago Police Fugitive Apprehension Section, the Gang Enforcement Team, and the United States Marshall Service. The Champaign County Sheriffs Department also was involved in the apprehension of Lightfoot.

He was charged late Wednesday with one count of first degree murder, according to Chicago Police News Affairs.

Chicago police issued an arrest warrant for Lightfoot after he was positively identified as the offender in connection with the homicide, a release from News Affairs said.

During the course of the investigation, Wentworth Area detectives obtained information regarding Lightfoot's whereabouts that led them to the downstate Champaign/Urbana region. After obtaining an arrest warrant, the Great Lakes Fugitive Apprehension Unit with the assistance of the Champaign County
Sheriffs, located and arrested Lightfoot without incident, according to News Affairs.

Lightfoot is expected to appear in Central Bond Court at 26th and California sometime Thursday.
