Chicago - Chicago Police fatally shot a Lincoln Square man who allegedly lunged at them with a knife Thursday night on the North Side.
Tarek El-Hila, 30, of 5156 N. Leavitt St., was shot multiple times at his home and was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m. at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday.
About 9:10 p.m., Lincoln District uniformed officers responded to a call of a person with a knife in a domestic-related incident, according to a statement from police News Affairs. Family members met responding officers in front of the residence, and one of the family members allowed the officers entry to the first floor apartment, the statement said.
Once inside, the officers announced their office and were confronted by the man, who was standing with a large knife in his hand. The officers ordered him to drop the knife, but he failed to comply and allegedly ran at the officers using the knife in a striking motion, according to the statement.
The officers, in fear of their lives and the safety of the family members, discharged their weapons, wounding the man. A knife was recovered on the scene, the statement said.
The officers were not injured, according to the statement.
The man was initially taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is investigating, Chief Administrator Ilana Rosenzweig said.
