Chicago - From all outward appearances, the family at 225 Wisconsin Avenue in Addison was fine. Neighbors say things seemed normal and just recently the woman who lived there had put up Christmas decorations outside.
But the holidays turned tragic early Wednesday morning when police received an urgent 911 call from a woman asking for help. Gunshots were reportedly heard in the background.
When officers arrived minutes later, they found the family of four dead inside.
“This house was secured, completely secured, doors, windows, everything. The cars were in the driveway. We forced entry to the residence,” said Addison Police Chief Tim Hayden.
The woman’s body was found in a hallway on the first floor, Hayden said. Two pre-teen boys were found in a second floor hallway, and the husband in an upstairs bedroom.
Sources said it appears the man shot his sons, and then his wife, before taking his own life.
Police said they have no motive. Investigators found shell casings, but no suicide note.
“That’s a shock, because I’m just finding out as of now, I just pulled up to my house. I knew it was a crime scene I had no idea what happened in the house,” said neighbor John Kruse.
Police said the victims are most likely the family who lived there, but the names are not being released until relatives can be notified.
Police said this is not a random act of violence, and there's no reason for neighbors to be worried.
Still many remain in shock.
“It’s scary, and like before the holidays, no parents should go through this, nobody, and no neighbors, I mean, how can you go to sleep now,” said Maria Burulea, who lives down the street.
Police said they've had no prior calls to this house. Court records give no indication of marriage or financial problems. Neighbors said things seemed fine.
For police, crimes like this are hard to handle, especially during the holidays.
“I can tell you right now that yea, some of the guys are having a tough time right now,” said Hayden.
The DuPage County Coroner has scheduled the autopsies for Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.
Relatives gathered at another home in Addison said they were too distraught to talk about what happened. They too were waiting for answers that may never come.
