Chicago - Federal authorities said Friday they believe the person responsible for robbing a River North bank Thursday afternoon is the Citibank Bandit -- already wanted for seven bank robberies and one attempted robbery in the past eight months.
About 5 p.m. Thursday, a man walked into a National City Bank branch at 5401 N. La Salle, handed the teller a note implying he had a weapon and threatening harm if his demands for cash were not met, according to FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates. No weapon was seen and no injuries were reported.
After taking an unknown amount of cash, he fled east on Kinzie, according to dispatch reports.
The Thursday robbery was the latest heist by the Citibank Bandit, who is one of Chicago's Most Wanted criminals, according to the FBI.
On Oct. 30, he allegedly attempted to robbed a Fifth Third Bank branch at 161 N. Clark St. On Oct. 22, he successfully robbed a Fifth Third branch at 57 E. Randolph St. and a Citibank branch at 111 W. Jackson Blvd. within two hours. His other robberies include five Citibank branches dating back to February, according to the FBI.
He generally displays a note threatening harm. In the Oct. 30 incident, he walked out empty handed when the teller walked away from the counter.
The suspect is a white male 40 to 45, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-11 and 160-180 pounds, according to the FBI. He has blue or green eyes and sometimes wears a green baseball cap. In some surveillance photos, he is wearing a Cubs hat and carrying a black leather bag.
Anyone with information should call the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
