Chicago - A South Side man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to binding his toddler in painter’s tape and posting a picture of the girl tied up in the blue adhesive on his Facebook page last year.
Andre Curry’s daughter was playing with the tape on Dec. 13 when the Applebee’s employee decided to wrap her up, Assistant State’s Atty. Erin Antonietti said at a bond hearing on Dec. 21. She showed a copy of the picture of the girl with blue tape over her mouth, with her wrists and ankles also bound.
Curry, 21, of the of the 6100 block of South Racine, used his cell phone to take the picture to post on Facebook. He allegedly captioned the photo, “This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back. ; ).”
Judge Laura Sullivan on Dec. 21 ruled the single father cannot have contact with his 22-month-old daughter or any child under the age of 18 while his aggravated domestic battery case is pending.
Curry was indicted Jan 8 and on Thursday pleaded not guilty, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin said. Curry will be back in court on Friday for a bond reduction hearing, he said. He is being held in the Cook County Jail on $100,000 bond.
Curry had been granted supervised visits with his daughter since officials with the Illinois Department of Family Services began investigating allegations of child abuse, assistant Cook County public defender Anand Sundaram said.
The incident involving the controversial image has been “blown out of proportion” since going viral on the Internet, Sundaram said.
The picture has since been removed from Curry’s Facebook page.
