Chicago, IL. - A teenage boy was shot by an off-duty police officer after allegedly breaking into his Southeast Side home with another person Tuesday night.

About 7:20 p.m., two offenders entered the home of an off-duty Hazel Crest police officer in the 8500 block of South Phillips Avenue, according to a police statement.

The two offenders broke into the rear of the home and the officer fired his weapon in the direction of the offenders. They fled the scene but were soon apprehended in the 8500 block of South Essex Avenue.

A teenage boy, between 16 and 18, was shot at the address and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.

The second offender was not injured but was immediately taken into custody by Calumet Area detectives.

Charges were pending against the two offenders Tuesday night.
