Last Day for "Cash for Clunkers" Program

Chicago, IL. - Today is the last chance to get a cash reward for trading in that "clunker" for a more fuel-efficient car. But many car lots are looking unusually empty.

Over the weekend, crowds rushed to take advantage of the program that ends this evening.

Some dealers have already bowed out of the program, out of fear they would have trouble getting reimbursed by the government. AutoNation, the nation's largest auto dealership chain, is one of them.

It said Saturday it was ending its participation early to make sure it could get all the necessary paperwork finished in time. A Wisconsin car dealer says he had to bring in extra staff to deal with the paperwork, but the spike in sales was worth the hassle.
