INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Tamika Catchings had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Indiana Fever to a 78-73 win over the Washington Mystics last night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Catchings endured a lengthy scoring drought from midway through the first quarter to midway through the third. But she scored 18 points in the second half and had several clutch baskets down the stretch.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana and Purdue now have New Year's Eve plans. Both schools will open the 2014-15 Big Ten season December 31st. The Boilermakers will host Minnesota. The Hoosiers will visit Nebraska.
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay's trial on two misdemeanor charges stemming from a March traffic stop has been postponed for two months. Irsay was arrested near his home in Carmel after he was spotted driving slowly, stopping in the roadway and failing to use a turn signal. Officers said he had trouble reciting the alphabet and failed other field sobriety tests.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - NCAA attorneys have notified the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that it intends to appeal the ruling in the Ed O'Bannon case. U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled Aug. 8 that the NCAA violated antitrust laws by restricting schools from providing money beyond current scholarship limits to athletes. She said schools should be allowed to place up to $5,000 per year of competition into a trust fund.
